Players and families first

It was an all very comforting sight to see Mr. Randy Exelby from BEHIND THE MASK showcasing the latest 'goods' for the 2010 hockey season in the Rollerplex Lobby.  It could only mean that the 2010 IHAAZ inline qualifier season had officially begun. Team moms, managers and coaches were humming with activity scurrying about to acquire last minute signatures on forms, getting AAU registration numbers and all the other wonderful madness and energy that makes the IHAAZ qualifiers so riveting.

 

8u Division

As in the Barney's IHAAZ preseason tournament in December, the Prescott Storm squad was just getting warmed up. The Q1 Rollerplex qualifier was a continuation of the dominance that this team has already captured.  The fact that the Storm only had one player in the top 5 of scoring (Mackenzie Ammons 3 goals), was a testament to the fact that this team knows when to make the plays that count.  When you add this observation to the additional fact that Storm goalie Sarah Jacobelli has yet to have a goal scored on her gate, then scoring a lot of points is really not essential for their success at this point in the season after all.

Yuma Blaze put on a display of offense that was impressive as the Blaze put up 3 times as many assists (9) as either the Storm or Havasu Dust Devils combined.  Blaze's Dalton Ott (5 goals, 2 assists) and Kelsey Hall (2 goals, 4 assists) topped the scoring board at number one and two respectively.  Ultimately the Storm had the defense to take the championship game over Yuma Blaze 2-0.

 

10u Division

With the Yuma Blaze Black playing up in the 12uB division, the 10u division was wide open.  As it turned out, the Prescott Storm grabbed the opportunity to make the plays that were vital in getting the number one seed into the championship game in spite of a real early round-robin dog fight with a very feisty Yuma Blaze Red team for a 3-3 tie.  Since both teams had identical round robin records with identical point differentials, Prescott advanced after a 4th level tie breaker having less penalty minutes than the Blaze.  Yuma Red's Hayden Maxwell, (top division scorer 8 goals, 3 assists) was effectively neutralized by an excellent Storm defense. Jared Shuter was Prescott's offensive leader in the championship game scoring a hat trick and outdueling Yuma's Maxwell's 2 goals resulting in a Storm 6-2 championship game victory.  A very bright spot for Yuma Red was gate keeper Jovan Cramer who topped Prescott's Jake Morales by a mere .84 percentage points for outstanding goalie award honors bagging an 80% save average in spite of their loss.

 

12uA Division

With 3 class and quality programs contending for the 12uA qualifier championship, the division had an air of urgent interest from many of the families and observers. In particular, 2 of the state's longest running programs, Casey's Crushers and AZ Stars, who have been in existence since the mid to late 90's were to face-off for a very exciting series of games.  Team Excalibur rounded out the 3 team division.  Team Excalibur was having to deal with significant roster moves prior to game time and this activity seemed to put an immediate damper on the momentum that never materialized for their team.  The round-robin matchup between AZ Stars and Crushers was surprising with the relative ease that the Stars were able to triumph 5-0.  Not much angst or drama, right?  Well...the Crushers simply put their game faces on, took care of Team Excalibur 7-1 in the semi-final game and got to the championship game.  Paxton Parker and Ben Jackson of AZ Stars struck first putting them up 2-0.  But it was the gutsy and determined play of Crushers Alex MacDonald and their goalie, Kevin Mooney and the entire resilience of the Crushers team that climbed the mountain and scored the tie breaking goal in the second period that gave the Crushers Blue a thrilling, chilling and inspiring come from behind championship victory over an extremely talented and well coached AZ Stars 3-2.

 

12uB Division

Interestingly, this division had the very same setup and storyline as the 12uA division. The last game of the division came down to a duel between AZ Stars 10u and Casey's Crushers 10u Red.  Both teams undefeated and untied squared off for a game that was well worth the price of admission.  In order to get to their undefeated record, AZ Stars had to overcome a furious Prescott Storm assault as the Storm went up early 2-0.  AZ Stars regrouped for 2nd period play and put an unbelievable long range shot as Carson Kosobud scored and Luke Hicks assisted on the youtube moment shot that gave them the victory over the Storm 3-2.  Conversely, Crushers Red had a virtual holiday as they romped over the field of teams into the final game.  Jonas Edwards of AZ Stars scored the winning goal in the hyper exciting finale over the Crushers 5-4 as AZ Stars captured the qualifier championship.

 

14u Division

The heart and soul of the 12u Yuma Blaze Black and their history making victory at last season's state championships was on center stage, but this time it was for the 14uA championship against the legendary and formidable Rollerplex Panthers program.  The Panthers program, after having a virtual monopoly on the division for so many seasons, faced off with the Yuma Black in the finale.  The anticipation for the matchup was not wasted as both teams stayed with striking distance of each other, where there was not more than a point difference between them going into the 2nd period.  But as was the case at last season's 12uA state final game, Yuma's leader Jack Allen, their balanced scoring attack and their excellent goalie, Wyatt Dennis, pulled away for a breathtaking 5-3 thrilling championship victory.  Making history in the process as Yuma Blaze Black became only the second non-metro team to ever win a 14uA championship at a qualifier since the Prescott Ravens last did it back in 2002.

It was all Prescott Storm in the 14uB championship game over the Casey's Crushers as Storm's Cooper King scored all the goals (4 goals, 1 assists) that they really needed to win the game as the Storm triumphed 7-2. Storm goalie Jay Knapp overcame injury from their tournament at Barney's in December and was stellar in his return winning outstanding goalie award honors and a qualifier title under his belt.

 

16u Division

Two of the most highly decorated and accomplished programs in inline state history, a bitterly fought state championship battle at last year's finals and the matchup between the Rollerplex Panthers and Team Excalibur was looking like a confrontation between 2 contentious prize fighters.  Both teams had their marquee players.  Both had outstanding goal tenders. What more could you ask for in this battle for program pride?  As it turned out, the finale turned into a battle of goalies as Plex's highly regarded goalie of Eric Brown outdueled the goaltending of two excellent Excalibur goalies of Brett Bushnell and Matt Davis as Plex came out on top 3-0.  Panthers had balanced scoring as most Panther teams are renowned for, hence their commanding winning records as Jayme Haveman, CJ Bebo and Reed Bazso all had a goal in their championship victory. If both teams continue their journey through the season, the state finals will be worth any amount for a ticket to experience.
