A fantastic experience

Sometimes it is difficult to define a wonderful experience when there are so many ingredients that go into making it so.  All that one needs to know, after as many seasons that families have made the trek to the Yuma IHAAZ qualifier, is that you leave with a feeling that it's not yet time to go, that you long to stay immersed in the good feeling and happiness of the moment.  Such as it was atsan diego sting rays Yuma, where the weather allowed paradise to flourish for at least a weekend and everyone was able to focus on their kids, hockey and an absolutely wonderful time, and to leave the unwanted pieces of a difficult recession behind.  It was also a time of accepting others as San Diego teams participated for the first time ever in the 11 year history of the IHAAZ.  The hockey, which was a good reason to participate in the revelry of Yuma, was icing on an already heavenly piece of cake.

8u Division

8u stormOne might have made the argument that Prescott Storm's time had come, that they simply couldn't continue at the pace that they had established at the Barney's preseason tournament this past December.  Well, the argument would have been an accurate one as the Storm did indeed stumble for the first time in the 2010 campaign with an ever opportunistic Yuma Blaze squad, taking them down in round-robin play 4-3.  But it was consumant Storm team leader, Jared Shuter, who put his game on the floor in the championship game, putting up 5 goals to lead Prescott to a championship victory over Yuma Blaze 6-2.  Yuma most certainly benefitted from the offensivejeffery montoya output of temporary team player, Thomas Farwell, who was at the qualifier with his family who live in San Diego.  But the Blaze most certainly held their own with an outstanding goalie effort from Jeffery Montoya as well as offensive power from Ven Chavez (2 goals, 2 assists) and Dalton Ott (3 goals).  Prescott still managed to top the scoring board with #1 scorer Jared Shuter (10 goals, 3assists), #3 scorer MacKanzie Ammons (5 goals, 1assist) and #4 scorer Luke Fain (3 goals, 2 assists).

10u Division

miguel cazaresYuma Blaze black moved back into the 10u division after a rollick up in the 12u division at Q1 Rollerplex and very quickly reestablished themselves as the big Dawgs after grabbing an undefeated record on their way to the 10uA championship.  But it was a valiant effort from the Prescott Storm which gave the Blaze a bit of a tussle for the championship before relenting to Blaze Black 1-4.  Yuma Blaze Red put their hat in the ring by tying the Storm 1-1 in an incredible defensive battle as goalies Jovan Cramer of Yuma Red and Jake Morales of Prescott Storm shut the gate on everything that came their way but one goal.  But at the end of the day, it was all Yuma Blaze Black, as their extremely experienced goalie, Garrett Ruby, and the top 3 scorers in the division with Miguel Cazares (5 goals, 4 assists), Luke Pancrazi (6 goals, 1 assist) and Logan Estes (3 goals, 4 assists) simply had too much firepower and defense for the others at this point in the season.  Others are improving and will push the envelope before the state finals tournament.

12u Division

As expected, the 12u division came down to 2 class programsbobby curley contending for the championship. Casey's Crushers Blue and Prescott storm, both of whom had not much trouble getting to the championship game, setting the stage for their second meeting of the season.  Crushers excellent forward, Bobby Curley, scored two goals in the first period of the championship final, keeping pace with the surprising scrappy Prescott Storm's production of 2 goals with one from Sierra Kimsey and one from Kyle Land. What was interesting was that both goalies (Crusher's Kevin Mooney, Storm's Jason Nelson) took the exact same number of shots in each period (10 shots in the first, 9 shots in the second).  But when it came to putting the game on the floor and making the big play, it was Crushers Bobby Curley who rose above it all and put the puck into the Storm net in the second period for a well earned 3-2 championship victory.

14u Division

In what was one of the biggest divisions at the Yuma qualifier, the outcome was the same for both A and B divisions as what it was at Q1 Rollerplex.  Yuma Blaze Black had nary wyatt dennisa problem with their first round-robin games as they cruised into the A championship game against the SD Stingrays.  On a sidenote, the SD Stingrays, who hail from northern San Diego, became the first out-of-state program to participate at a Yuma qualifier.  The SD Stingrays had their hands full in their round-robin group when Yuma Blaze Red gave them a very difficult game and simply refused to go down.  It was Yuma Red's Chase Pancrazi who put up 4 goals in the game to pester the SD Stingrays hope of getting a victory.  but it was the SD Stingrays getting the go ahead goal that sent them into the championship game against Yuma Blaze Black.  It was all Blaze Black in the A championship game as the SD Stingrays simply couldn't match up against the very potent Blaze black offense and their formidable defense.  Blaze cooper kingBlack's leader Jack Allen, came up with a hat trick and goalie Wyatt Dennis made the tough saves as Yuma Blaze Black continued their dominating roll to another victory.

In the 14 'B' title game, Prescott Storm's Cooper King and last season's top 12 'B' scoring champion Steven Rubio both ganged up on the Sharp shooters by putting up hat tricks while shutting down what was a very good Sharp shooter attack taking a 7-2 championship victory.

16u Division

In what had to be one of the most intriguing match-ups of division teams, there was more scoring diversity than wzach semonianhat has yet been seen in any qualifier in the 16u division for some time. Tournament top scorer Bradley Hovlid of Rollerplex Panthers (5 goals, 5 assists) was followed by Gila Ridge Hawks Blue Robert Norton (6 goals, 3 assists), then Rollerplex Panthers Jesse Rooney (4 goals, 4 assists) followed by SD Stingrays Zach Semonian (3 goals, 3 assists). The Panthers, however, remained undefeated for the entire qualifier season as they did just get past a very gutsy effort from the Gila Ridge Hawks Blue, coming out on top 4-3 and setting up a big game with the undefeated SD Stingrays.  But the Panthers incredibly well balanced scoring attack coupled with a great hat trick effort from their scoring leader, Bradley bradley hovlidHovlid, the SD Stingrays simply couldn't match-up with the depth of the Panthers roster as the Stingrays went down 3-7.  Panther's excellent goalie, Eric Brown, stopped the shots that were vital for every victory even if his .822 save average may not have been up to his standards.  But in the end, the SD Stingrays had to hope that their record tying point differential against Gila Ridge Hawks Blue was enough for the silver medal.  As it was, the Stingrays had a very happy trip back to California after having beaten the Gila Ridge Hawks Blue by a mere goal differential of one point.  So went a very exciting and chaotic ending to a high scoring division at Yuma.

Yuma takes 2nd Winter Classic

Yuma qualifier Q2 was not just to satisfy the hockey cravings for our youngsters.  No, it has taken on a much more immediate impact as youth team coaches, managers and player's parents have, for the second year in a row, asked their youngsters to step aside, and watch, or should we say, not giggle, when they witness their athleticism and skill while performing. Yes, it was a fun and engaging battle of pride as the Yuma Blaze adults took on the best of the Prescott adult clan right smack dab in the middle of all the youth action andyuma and prescott adults round-robin play. Yuma's Steve Anderson was their big playmaker as he had 1 goal and 2 assists.  Prescott's big kahuna was 'Big, Bad' Brent Nielson as he put up a hat trick.  but the ultimate hero was Kyle Letendre as the game was deadlocked at 5-5 after regulation as he not only scored the game tying goal with less than a minute remaining, but also put in the winning score during the overtime shootout.  Can anyone say "Rematch in Spring?"  »Download score sheet
